Layer means that the world is not a pile of parallel facts. It unfolds layer by layer. Phenomena can be observed, mechanisms must be pursued, and each layer only shows its boundary when placed inside the whole.

Each layer has its own concepts and effective variables. A lower layer can manifest through an upper layer, but the upper layer cannot automatically infer the lower one.

Operating Rules

  1. First match the layer, then judge the answer. Opposite statements may both be true when they belong to different layers.
  2. Use the instrument of the layer. Prices, inventories, collateral, debt, credit, and policy language do not answer the same question.
  3. After drilling down, rise again. Mechanism is not the whole. The third question is always where the mechanism sits inside the larger picture.

Place in the Whole

Layer is the grammar behind the site’s three-question method. It pairs with Phase Transition: a phase transition is often the moment when an upper-layer rule fails and exposes the deeper layer beneath it.
